Do you snore? Do You have a sleep disorder?

Normal Airway stays open during sleep

Do you snore? Are you exhausted all day? Do you want to sleep better? Have you been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea? If you suffer from any of these symptoms or are interested in helping nearly 20 million undiagnosed sleep Apnea sufferers in this country you've come to the right place. Sleep Group Solutions is an obstructive sleep Apnea and airway diagnostic.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea occurs when the tissues of your upper airway (throat) collapse down and restrict or prevent you from breathing for extended periods of time while you sleep.

    Airway collapses with sleep apnea
A person with diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea can have hundreds, sometimes thousands, of events throughout the night. The body rarely wakes up and patients don't often recall not breathing, even though it happened many times. The body is deprived of valuable oxygen, it is essentially being suffocated at night, every night over and over again...

As a result of the constant nighttime breathing stoppages, patients will often begin to suffer from a number of symptoms directly related to sleep apnea.

    These include:
    -headaches
    -snoring
    -excessive daytime tiredness
    -acid reflux
    -high blood pressure
    -diabetes
    -heart attack
    -stroke

    About Sleep

People spend one third of their lives sleeping! We simply cannot live without it. Memory, immune system function and daytime energy are all directly linked to sleep. It is estimated that up to 90,000,000 people in North America suffer from a sleep disorder. Are you one of them?

During normal sleep there is a general decrease in body temperature, blood pressure, breathing rate, and most of our other bodily functions. Conversely, the brain does not decrease in activity. Numerous studies have demonstrated that our brains are as active during sleep as they are during waking hours. In an eight-hour sleep cycle, normal adults alternate between two extremely different states: REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and non-REM sleep.

    REM Sleep
Most dreaming takes place during REM sleep. REM sleep makes up about
20 - 25% of the sleep cycle in normal adults. REM sleep is characterized by:

    Eyelid fluttering
    Rapid eye movement
    Muscle paralysis
    Irregular breathing
    Decrease in body temperature
Changes in heart rate and blood pressure

How much sleep do I need?
this is a common question asked by patients. Sleep needs vary from person to person, but most adults require between 7-8 hours of sleep to be properly rested. Infants need as many as 15 hours while the elderly can get by with as little as 5-7.

Why do I wake up feeling tired?
Most likely, because you have a sleep disorder. Something fragmented your sleep cycle and if it was not an outside irritant (children, pets etc..) then it could be a sleep disorder. One of the most common sleep disorders is obstructive sleep apnea.

    Is snoring harmful?
Unless you consider the damage done to the relationship with your bed partner then no, snoring is not generally considered harmful on its own. It can actually be easily treated and eliminated by an experienced dentist at one of the SGS clinics. Snoring is, however, considered a strong risk factor for a disorder that is very harmful called obstructive sleep apnea.

    Sleep Apnea Treatment Options

    Elastic Mandibular Advancement

There are many treatment options available to people suffering from OSA. The one that has been getting the most attention lately is oral appliance therapy. Oral appliances work by holding your lower jaw open and slightly forward during sleep. This prevents the tongue from falling back and contacting the back of your throat and creating an obstruction. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, oral appliances are the recommended first line treatment for mild to moderate sleep apnea.

    SomnoMed MAS
There are currently nearly 85 appliances FDA approved to treat sleep apnea. All SGS clinics and clients have been well trained in appliance selection and treatment techniques. Oral Appliances present an appealing treatment option for newly diagnosed patients as well as patients who have been previously diagnosed with sleep apnea and are unhappy with the recommended CPAP therapy.

These are just a few examples of some of the fine appliances available at SGS trained clinics. They all accomplish the same basic function of holding your jaw in an open and forward position. This position tightens up the loose, collapsible, tissues of the airway and makes it larger and more stable. To get started with an oral appliance today, fill out the Initial Sleep Screening form and submit it online or call us for an appointment at 505-892-8600.

    Non-surgical Approaches:

    Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure (CPAP)

    Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure

(CPAP): Is the most common treatment option prescribed to people suffering from OSA. CPAP Involves wearing a mask that supplies the patient with a steady stream of air through their nose during sleep. This airflow through the nose goes down the airway and acts as a sort of 'splint' to hold the airway open and prevent collapse. CPAP is a highly effective treatment option and is recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as the preferred treatment for severe sleep apnea. Unfortunately many people find CPAP intolerable and choose not to use it every night.

A weight loss: Weight loss of even 10% can reduce sleep apnea.

Changing your sleep habits: Sometimes sleeping on one's side instead of on one's back can reduce sleep apnea in mild cases.

Behavior modification: Avoiding sedatives & alcohol can sometimes help to reduce the symptoms of sleep apnea.

Somnoplasty: This procedure uses radio frequency energy to reduce the soft tissue in the upper airway.

    Surgical Approaches:

    Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP): Removes the soft tissue and the uvula from the back of the throat and soft palate. This increases the size of the airway at the throat's opening and inhibits those tissues from collapsing and closing off the airway.

Mandibular maxillary advancement: This procedure involves surgery in which the upper and lower jaws are cut, surgical implats are put in place as spacers, and then the jaws are re-attached in a protruced position.

Palatal Implants: Three small polyester inserts are placed in the patient's soft palate, causing the palate to stiffen & thereby helping to prevent or reduce blockages of the airway.
